Once arrived in Pompei by train, I found some helpful guys (I was travelling alone and didn't know anything about the area) who worked for the Info Point at the first floor of the train station. I went upstairs, I was helped by the staff and I made the best choice! They suggested me to join a 2hrs walking tour of the ruins.. the Best I had in my life! The guide was Carmen, who is and archeologist as well, she spoke perfect English, was not rushing and made the tour very interesting! Next time I'll visit Italy, I'll do It again for sure! Highly recommended ( if you want to know something about the huge park, since there are NO infos and directions, and if you want to skip the looong lines!!!)

They lure you in with a free map (unreliable, download it from the official Pompeii website) and offer an audioguide. It's a waste of money and time: the audio doesn't follow the updated visiting routes and, even if it did, all it does is stating the obvious. A voice that says what you can already see giving very little insights. Pointless.
We had the best tour guide! We got there first thing in the morning and was able join a tour. If you do your research before a hand a tour isn’t really needed but is helpful.
We booked in advance, and were very happy with the service. When we arrived in Pompeii early, our fantastic guide Alessandra even came to meet us early. She couldn’t have been more engaging and really took the time to help transport us back to daily life in Pompeii just before the catastrophe. I would totally recommend booking a tour, and a private tour at that. We felt it was absolutely worth the extra money, and lost no time waiting for other people.
