Amazing. The Cathedral was not on the plan, the city of Salerno was not even on the plan, but on the way to Pompei the decision has been made. For good. The place welcomes you with a lot of space and simplicity and then one level lower, for me personally, the Cathedral shows its beauty. The complex combination of the different elements completed by sculptures and graphics - speechless. If you are near Salerno - make sure to visit it!

A huge piece of history of Salerno, the only cathedral were is buried a Pope outside of the Vatican City. Quick visit but definitely worth the time.

Great cathedral in Salerno with a very large ornate crypt which, according to legend, houses the remains of St. Matthew the Apostle. The cathedral and the crypt are both worth a visit when in Salerno.

Probably the most important cathedral in Southern Italy (excluding Sicily)! Exterior is in pure Roman style, while interior is an odd mix of Baroque, Romanesque (Byzantine-like), Gothic (sculptures) and Moorish. Of highest interest are the mosaics in the recently restored altar, who alone place Salerno on the map of art lovers.

Absolutely incredible experience, especially the crypt of St Mathew. In the main church a very unobtrusive stairway leads you to the crypt - don’t miss it! It’s amazing and I’ve seen all of the well noted churches and mosques but this is truly one of a kind.
