We had no idea of this privately held Roman hidden treasure even though our Hotel was one block away (and we were there for over a week). We happened to be there early morning before the museum opened and a worker informed us. No other tourists present. Porta Pia is about 100 meters away from the famous battle and breach of the original Vatican walls (previously all Papal States territory) built next to the Aurelean walls. The Vatican City / Papal States takeover by the revolutionaries even has a small scale model of the battle scene inside the museum. About a hundred meters away (west) from Porta Pia is another monument with the inscribed names of the forty soldiers that died in that event. This spot marked the actual breach of the wall location. Pope Pius in order to avoid any more bloodshed caved in to the demands of the invading enemies of the Catholic Church. Five Stars for historical significance.

Porta Pia is a gate in the Aurelian Walls of Rome, Italy. One of Pope Pius IV's civic improvements to the city, it is named after him. Situated at the end of a new street, the Via Pia, it was designed by Michelangelo in replacement for the Porta Nomentana situated several hundred meters southwards, which was closed up at the same time. Construction began in 1561 and ended in 1565, after the artist's death. A 1561 bronze commemorative medal by Gianfederico Bonzagna shows an early plan by Michelangelo, very different from his final design
