La Spezia is a gateway city if you want to visit the famous CinqueTerre, the five pretty-as-a-penny picturesque villages of Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso al Mare. These five pretty villages are part of a National Park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site which brings in over 2 million visitors every year. La Spezia sits between Genoa and Pisa which are the two big cities from where a majority of tourists drive the 1 hour journey. La Spezia on the other hand is just 30 kilometres by road if you take the SP530 which joins the SP370 that will take you to Cinque Terre. It is only 10 minutes by train and a ticket may put you back by about 4 for a one way or 16 for the CinqueTerre Card which allows you unlimited train trips between the villages. La Spezia witnesses a high number of uniformed Naval sailors as it is the base for the Navigation School and probably Italy's biggest Naval base.

It's located near the city center of La Spezia. It's very convenient and easy walk to the city. The officers were friendly and the port was quite modern.

TO ALL FELLOW CRUISE SHIP GUESTS PLANNING FOR A LOCAL TOUR AT THIS PORT OF CALL. ESPECIALLY GUESTS OF ROYAL CARRIBEAN: Cruise Terminal itself does not have a problem. It is slightly old and under-facilitated. However, beware of the stalls located in the terminal operated by Costa. We went to Lerici by local bus and the person in charge of the stall directed us to a place for bus tickets. There was no problem for our outbound trip but on our inbound, we were not aware of how the tickets should be used and we did not put the tickets into the ticket validator. Absolutely no one who boarded the bus on our outbound trip even put their tickets into the validator, so as tourists, we did what locals did- so we held our tickets onto the bus, with no instructions on the bus or by the bus driver, we successfully arrived at Lerici. On our way back there were a team of four local bus enforcement officers. They escorted off the bus and took our passports and tried to force us pay 140 euros of fine without telling us why. Then they tried to accuse us for not buying the right ticket, then pointed out we did not validate our tickets when we boarded the bus after we explained where we bought the tickets. They even tried to snatch our possessions for instance our cruise identification pass. They kept blasting Italian to us, which we did not know even a word, and kept our passports, forcing us to pay the fine. We think we do not deserve the fine, as tourists we were not intentionally trying to break the rules. But at last, we did not pay even a penny of the fine and was able to leave with our passports and our property . The whole thing lasted for 45 minutes and we suspect they did not want to waste our time. Please be aware, fellow cruise passengers, call the cruise emergency number if you need help.
