We enjoyed a long winding drive up through the hills coming from Arbatax. The road itself is worth it, especially if you ride a motorcycle. The town itself has a nice parking area at about the halfpoint down the hill(coming from Elena) be careful, if your car is low you will hit the ground going into the parking lot. The Town itself: Great view above the mountains. We had clouds sitting right in the town adding to the general spooky nature of such a lost place. The buildings must habe had a romantic feeling during the 40s. Now they are hollow shells of a lost life. Sadly we could not find a sign or memorial with the history of the town. In short: Huge crop failures and landslides comboned with mudfloods forced the town to relocate. If you are a good climber and unafraid you can check out some second floors. Be reminded that everything can and might collapse. Some buildings are also still in ise for farming e.g. as stables. Also stay out of the garden in the town center. It is still family owned and maintained. In Short: The trip was really worth it! :)

Amazing place. One can almost feel the overwhelming desperation that must have led them to just leave everything behind.

Perhaps the most impressive ghost village in Sardinia, abandoned since 1951 following devastating floods. Also impressive view of the surrounding mountains and villages. #Ogliastra #Sardinia

Ghost town Gairo Vecchio was abandoned in the 1960s after a series of catastrophic alluvial floods following 4 days of continuous rainfall. Unforgettable visit.
