A Greek-Orthodox church built between 1536-1561 for the use of Venice's Greek community. The architects were Sante Lobardo and, after 1548, Giannantonio Hiona. Its' interior is covered with magnificent works by renowned byzantine painters of the 16th and 17th centuries. Ioannis Kyprios, from Cyprus, painted on the dome (1589-90) under the supervision of the illustrious Tintoretto, the Cretan Mihail Damaschinos left his mark on the wooden screen and his compatriot, from the city of Rethymnon, Emmanouil Tzane Bounialis even served as a priest of the church while adding the paintings of the hermits Simon and Alypios. Today the church is under the jurisdiction of the Orthodox Archdiocese of Italy and Malta and is owned by the Hellenic Institute of Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Studies in Venice.

Bell Tower of the Greek Orthodox Church of Saint George, visible along the Rio dei Greci canal and from the Ponte dei Greci as well as in some surrounding streets of the Castello area of Venice.

If you are orthodox, this is a must. If not, you can skip with all the other churches to see. Pictures are not allowed, but the entire chapel is covered in a pamphlet. Each piece of art, described and all are beautiful.

A very traditional church, with some interesting works of art as well as the tranquility of the church for being with your thoughts.
