La chiesa viene citata per la prima volta in documenti ufficiali in una bolla papale nell'anno 1195. Nel tempo ha subito diversi interventi di ristrutturazione, nel 1622 e' stata eletta cattedrale con l'elevazione di San Miniato a sede diocesana. La chiesa è stata teatro un sanguinoso episodio : il 22 luglio 1944 un proiettile d'artiglieria americana penetrò nell'edificio uccidendo 55 persone che erano stati radunati in chiesa dai tedeschi.

Prachtige kathedraal in een mooi plaatsje als San Miniato. Veel mooie beelden , schilderijen en prachtig marmer zijn te bewonderen. Het plein , het museum , de kapel en de beide torens zijn zeker ook te bezoeken. Erg interessant en leerrijk bezoek. Opgepast voor een bezoek aan de Toren in de kathedraal want er zijn heel wat trappen te beklimmen

Chiesa del XII secolo divenuta cattedrale nel 1622. A vederla dall'esterno può ingannare data la sua povertà dei materiali e delle forme. Appena però so varca la soglia si può apprezzare tutta la sua ricchezza e bellezza.
