I loved this place and it’s attached museum! The museum ticket got you into the crypts under the cathedral, and then you take a stairwell up into the cathedral. You can see where they were baptized, an old Roman water storage area, etc. I highly recommend!

Great, if not slightly overrated. I guess you have to be a romantic or religious to really appreciate it, neither of which I am! Still, the scenery is marvellous and it's a great day out. I think it's one of the key places that everyone should visit if you go to Italy as it has real historical significance.

Exquisite church. This is where Sts Francis, Clare and Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows were baptised. The font still stands in the corner. We were blessed to have a nun show us around and had a peek in the sacristy, which is like a little chapel of its own, with altar and relics. Simply beautiful. Very elegant sacred art and architecture.

Some beautiful works of art contained behind an impressive 12th-century facade.

The Duomo of Assisi is regularly overlooked but should not be. San Rufino is the patron saint of Assisi. The cathedral is not ornate, but contains remains and links to Assisi’s ancient Roman heritage and its first bishop. The crypt and museum underneath are well worth a visit. Climb the stairs to the top of the bell tower for one of the best views of Assisi. You can also visit the altar to Santa Chiara marking the place of her birth.
