Visited October 2017. Beautiful building! Waited in the queue to go inside, but didn't make it. It was a very tragic day. A Spanish tourist was killed in the building when a block of marble came loose in the ceiling, fell 66 ft. and killed the man. It was a traumatic day for all in the church that day. By God's grace I was not in the building when the incident happened.

The beautiful basilica was designed by Arnolfo di Cambio between 1294 and 1385 and owes its name to a splinter of the Holy Cross donated by King Louis IX of France in 1258. It was consecrated in 1442 by Pope Eugene IV. Made in marble, in neo-Gothic style, the façade dates from 1857-1863. The Jewish architect Niccolo Matas from Ancona, designed the church's façade, working a prominent Star of David into the composition. Basilica of Santa Croce is an extremely beautiful and important church. Its most notable features are its sixteen chapels, many of them decorated with frescoes by Giotto and his pupils, and its tombs and cenotaphs. The Basilica is the largest Franciscan church in the world. It is situated on the Piazza di Santa Croce, about 800 meters south-east of the Duomo. The site, when first chosen, was in marshland outside the city walls. It is the burial place of some of the most illustrious Italians, such as Michelangelo, Galileo, Machiavelli, the poet Foscolo, the philosopher Gentile and the composer Rossini, thus it is known also as the Temple of the Italian Glories (Tempio dell'Itale Glorie).

The most interesting church in Florence if not in the country. The place where the most important masters are buried.
