So much history here - I wish I had an audio guide. It is quite spectacular the ruins of this grotto

Great day trip, an interesting historical and cultural spot. It rained when we went and we still had a great time. The castle was very interesting and students were giving free tours at the time. Lots of good food spots nearby and some crafty shops worth a browse.

Grottoes of Catullus (Grotte di Catullo in Italian)Is the name given to the ruins of a Roman villa which was built at the end of the 1st century B.C . The archaeological area of \u200b\u200bthe Grotte di Catullo preserves the remains of one of the largest residential villas in northern Italy. Located in an exceptional position, on the tip of the Sirmione peninsula, it overlooks the entire basin of Lake Garda from the top of the rocky spur. The villa occupies an area of \u200b\u200babout 2 hectares and is surrounded by a historic olive grove of over 1500 plants. It is today the most important testimony of the Roman period in the province of Sirmione and is the best example imposing Roman villa present in northern Italy. In 2013 the complex of the Catullo Caves and the archaeological museum of Sirmione were the twenty-seventh most visited Italian site, with 215,961 visitors and a total gross income of 504,700 euros.

Georgious site with amazing views on the lake below. Absolute recommendation. Don't do like us, but buy the combi ticket with the castle. Small discount and both are must see in Sirmione.
